This island, now part of the Bahamas, was the first point of contact between Europe and the American continent.

This day was established as the official date of the discovery of America due to Columbus’s own records in his navigation journal and because of the symbolic importance of that encounter between two worlds. In many countries, such as Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and Colombia, October 12 is commemorated under different names and meanings, ranging from Day of the Race to Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity.

The world before the discovery

At the end of the 15th century, Europe was undergoing a period of profound change. Traditional trade routes to Asia were blocked following the fall of Constantinople in 1453. The need to find new routes to the riches of the East drove sailors, adventurers, and entire kingdoms to explore other alternatives.

In this historical context, the figure of Christopher Columbus emerges, who held the theory that one could reach Asia by sailing westward. Although his proposal was rejected by several European courts, he eventually obtained the financial and political support of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon.

The expedition set sail on August 3, 1492, from the port of Palos de la Frontera, and after more than two months at sea, the discovery of America became a reality that would change the map of the world.

Christopher Columbus: Between Legend and History

Columbus, often portrayed as the great heroic discoverer, has been a debated figure for centuries. Born in Genoa around 1451, he trained as a navigator and merchant. His obsession with finding a westward route to Asia led him to study maps, read astronomers, and cling to his geographical convictions.

Although he is credited with the discovery of America, the truth is that he never knew he had reached a continent unknown to Europe. Until his death, he believed he had arrived on the shores of the Far East.

Over time, Columbus’s image has been reinterpreted. For some, he was a pioneer; for others, the symbol of the beginning of colonization and its consequences. What is certain is that his voyage on October 12, 1492, marked the beginning of an era that irreversibly transformed the world.

The Arrival in the New World: Chronicle of the First Encounter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGkY7A0GTQk

The first contact between Europeans and the native peoples was peaceful, according to the ship’s logs. The Taino Indians approached with curiosity, while the Spaniards observed their customs, clothing, and way of life.

Columbus thought he was in the Indies, so he called the natives “Indians,” a term that stuck for centuries. He soon began exploring other Caribbean islands, such as Cuba and Hispaniola (present-day Dominican Republic and Haiti).

This encounter marked the beginning of an unprecedented expansion, which led to conquest, cultural exchange, evangelization, and also dark episodes of violence, slavery, and extermination.
